The purpose of the breaking of bread is to remember the Lord in all He did for us. So It would be good to do it as often as we can so that we would always remember and not easily forget.

Leon said:

I agree that often is good but we have to make sure that the meaning does not get diluted by tradition which is the case most of the time. This requires creativity that is beyond the normal things we do now. Are we truly capable of that?

1 Corinthians 11:25-26 "25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes"

Jesus said that we are to do this "as often". People in the early church did it daily (Acts 2:46-47).

There is a need to teach and preach about Eucharist because it's an important sacrament established by Jesus.

If we need prayer & Bible reading daily, worship and sermon weekly, why not Eucharist daily or weekly?

To me, there are only 3 things hindering this:
1) Tradition of doing Eucharist monthly
2) Speculation that Eucharist may loose its meaning if it's done too often
3) Cost, effort to prepare Eucharist & time spent on Sunday morning for Eucharist (especially for big churches)

Leon said:

Thanks Mike for your contribution. I see it as beneficial....but necessary? I can't seem to get myself to push my entire congregation to do this unless I see it necessary for them to live their Christians lives more fervently. Will it? I'm skeptical

Rituals without understanding leads to legalism. Maybe the understanding portion is assumed when Holper suggested frequent celebrations of the Communion :)

Leon said:

Perhaps rightly so.....but I wonder whether what we do not in fact already is legalistic

Each time we observe the communion it re-narrates the salvation story... with a proper understanding of the Eucharist and the weekly observance would help to make conscious and strengthen the idea of us being a BODY of Christ and inter-connectedness of every members in the church. Yes, the routine observation of the ritual without understanding would be pointless. However, if there's a proper understanding of the Eucharist among the people a weekly observance would serve to strengthen the bond among the members as they are reminded of their interconnectedness every week through the celebration of the Eucharist.

Thanks so much for your comment. That would mean we have to make Christian Education work even better for us in this area.... Do you think however that the systems created in the church today however is the biggest hindrance?
