Cranium or Pictionary? by nancy toh

We just had board games last night! And I didn’t have the time to write something up but our dearest sister nancy wrote something great! Hehe. It is a night I want to remember for the rest of my life. Thanks for the write up! Here it is:

Board games night, something our church folks look forward to! This time around we could not decide which to play so we had to cast lots…… cranium it is!

We were introduced to this game some years ago and we have been playing occasionally since it drains quite a bit of you (especially some hyperactive individuals like the owner of this blog!). It is basically like any board game with the team completing the round first, wins.

Let me explain Cranium! There are activities which must be performed by one member and guess correctly by other team members within time limit (similar to pictionary) to get to roll the colored dice (not the usual numbered dice) to move on.

The 4 boxes of activities/character card consists of Creative Cat where one has to draw with or without blindfold or sculpt using the clay provided.

The second one is Word Worm – now most of us find this the toughest and sometimes we couldn’t move on just like last night because we just can’t perform/do what is required that is, spelling backwards without looking at the word and have to get it right the first time (dear readers try spelling this word unanimous backwards but remember no looking at the word at all, wait a minute! I don’t know how you are able to try that now since you have just read it!…hahaha…anyway just want to impress on you how tough it is), spelling a word as it is, filling in missing characters, rearranging characters to get the correct word, correct definition of a word given, very tough (i guess if we are worms than we can sail/wriggle through this activity, Word Worm ma)… my team lost because of this la! Do you all agree team members??..hahaha.

The next one, Star Performer is where one will have to hum or whistle a song, acting out/charade a word or acting like a famous person/character. Last but not least is the Data Head – polygraph, a general knowledge question, a true or false statement, multiple choice question or simply answer a question which isn’t that simple to answer!

We were briefed of the rules and all ready to be the Champion with our itching need for competition we were ready to conquer the world! (Ahem…a little too excited). So our game started I think close to 10.30pm after youth meeting and we have a huge crowd, slightly less than 45, (we have parents, youth, and even the cute little ones like about 8 years of age)… this is huge number for a board game session.

Imagine the rowdiness at times but it was such fun, to see the excitement, hilarious antics and also very quiet tense moments of concentration depending on the character card. Some cards drawn are ‘all play’ cards which means all teams will compete and of course the chaotic shouting of the answer could tear the building down. Some even lost their voices by the end of the game haha.

There was one instance someone had to act out the word escalator, now how to do that but he could!! And he earned the best actor award!! You wouldn’t want to know what was his trophy… hahaha…that left us in stitches!! Ok and now this was bizarre, the sculpting of a mobile phone which looked like sweet potato to us and yet the team members could guess that its a mobile phone!! (the power of imagination?? or beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder??) …amazing and someone mentioned that team has telepathy.

Then there was the humming of ‘dancing queen’ which was guessed as ‘three blind mice’ and a sketching of ‘father christmas’ was guessed as godzilla, of course the reason was ‘the drawing has horns ma… so godzilla la’ but mind you, the poor fella doing the sketching was blindfolded!!… hahaha.

Haah, that was fun, exhaustingly fun! At almost 1am, finally we have a winning team (after almost 3 hours of non-stop hard adrenaline pumping). We definitely saw much teamwork, some hidden talents revealed (especially the shy ones) since we insist that everyone single team member must have their turns, so none were left out (I hope).

What a great time of clean fellowship and fun! At packing up, we see smiling faces, some still excited and talking about the game. I would be brave to say not one person walked out without a gleaming smile on their face. When can we have the next game? I wonder. And of course, we are grateful to our pastors for allowing us the use of church premise.

For those who haven’t a clue what you have been reading, go buy Cranium from Toys’r'us (not promoting for them but there is where we bought our set and don’t know where else to get from). Try it out, you will be hooked!

The end

Not bad huh? Keep it up. Write more ok?
