‘Cow jumps over the mountain’

It is the final day and I cannot wait to get home. It is apparent that I’m starting to worry if I have to stay away from Malaysia longer than this. I woke up rather late because I couldn’t sleep last night. Probably because I was really thinking a lot of whether going home is a good thing or not. I couldn’t come out with a solid decision and therefore toiled around in bed until 3 am. I got so weary but still couldn’t really get myself to rest. So I popped two panadols in and it worked magic.

I got my bags all ready and everything, only to be caught by surprised that we were not going anywhere. Sorry no presents and souvenirs then hehehe. Sothy’s wife had prepared a wonderful meal. It called something like ‚Äòcow jump over the mountain’ in literal translation.

Its somewhat like the Korean barbeque we have back home just all natural without those seasoning and stuff. Lots of local vegetables too. Well I liked it because of its mildness in flavour but my stomach could only take so much since I was sick.

Chess Mastermind at work

I then proceeded to play chess outside with some locals and found myself really rusty in terms of skills. But it was so fun playing chess once again.

So here I am stuck at the boarding area getting bored out of my head, that I grabbed my EEEPC out and started typing this.
It is so humiliating here me blowing my nose and everybody is looking at me like I am a plague…. Haha….the tissues are pilling up also hehe….a lot of ‘wan tan’s’ here,

This was some of my medicine – you squeeze it and the suck the juice…interesting way to eat an orange….and it is green in color but sweet!!

I will compress these two days into one because I practically just spent most of my time bedridden. I was really out of it because the whole night through I had difficulty breathing, a sore throat, coughing my lungs out. I didn’t want to wake the others up so I pushed through the pain. Sothy arrived early in the morning as he was going to take me on a tour but I couldn’t get up. I told him I needed medication. He immediately wrote them down and rushed off to buy it for me. They couldn’t find what I needed but some anti-histamine helped. I was aching to the bone and so they left me to rest.

I was a living factory of green mucus and phlegm. I had finished a box of tissues with my nose running all over the place and was moving on the second box and I was tempted to show you a picture of the mess. But I’ll spare you this time ok? So I rested most of the day until dinner where I was brought to eat something soupy to help.

Roast BBQ chicken by the road side

Yummy beef steamboat which I could hardly taste

They took care of me so so well as they promised you guys and if not for them I would have been worse. Finally they managed to obtain an inhaler for me that really helped me to start breathing and gained the strength to walk. I don’t like doctors so I refused to go. I’ve been also so used to being sick that I was sure I could handle it. Still other than my breathing things weren’t good. They laughed when I said that the Cambodian bug is stronger than the bug in Malaysia.

I slept better this time but woke up constantly coughing out phlegm and blood. I was not typically worried though but just smsed home for some advice.

Now I’m feeling better. Sothy is with his wife having a blast and I’m glad because he almost gave that up to take care of me. So sorry guys, I wasn’t able to procure many pictures unless you want some pictures of a bedridden man with tissues filled with phlegm and blood. Hahahaha

At the end of day 7, I was on my feet again though still weak, I didn’t feel so dead. Thanks for your prayers from home.

I could hardly get up feeling my whole body aching and my throat giving me a hard time to even swallow. Still I had an important duty and priviledge today and I had to make sure I was on time. Today I was to preach at Lighthouse Assembly. The church that Sothy is the senior pastor of. It was apparently customary that the couple not attend church after their ceremony because they still had to clean up. Yet Sothy made it a point to say that he would come as it was the right thing to do.

I was there earlier that most people. So I setup my notebook and tested it out. The song sounds fine and I’m going to try to sing it despite feeling like throwing out all morning. Because we didn’t have the time to print out my sermons I had to place another notebook on stage for when I preached. See…good to have two notebooks hor….hahaha.

I felt like a show off though but pushing that feeling aside because I knew that was the only option possible. If I still had my PDA then it would have been different but I recently gave it to my dad….bye Dopod, I miss you. So service is almost like ours, beginning with praise and worship. I tried to sing but oh my, it hurt and I couldn’t hold a tune well. I was also feeling very nervous as preaching to me is a very sacred thing and I constantly was in prayer asking God for His strength, anointing and favour. There was a Philippine group here also doing mission and so they had a little sharing and song in which the girl sounded great. The pressure was mounting up.

I was introduced and when I stepped on stage, I just let it all go. I talked about the song and told them why I didn’t sing it yesterday. I dedicated the song to the couple and began singing. I cracked at a few parts, but overall I thank God it was alright.

Now comes the preaching part. I would comment less about it but I thank God for the assurance of His presence all the time. I just preached my heart out.

One sermon done, another to go. I was in auto cruise mode just relying on God through all this. I still don’t know where the words came from as I actually spoke so differently from what I typed down. Still God’s presence filled the place and I believe both sermons fulfilled its purpose among the people. Thank God. Also I had people back home who were really praying for me too. If not for them, I wouldn’t have made it. Thank You!

Sick but still smiling hhehehe…see the happy bride???

We had a magnificent lunch at cafe bubble tea (Malaysian Owned) and I got back and collapsed on my bed. This time really really sick.

I was supposed to be following both Sothy and Ratthana as they went to the lake gardens to take pictures. Sothy sensing my tiredness asked me to go get some rest first before the evening dinner. So I did return to the church only for a blackout to happen 5 minutes after I arrived. It was too hot to sleep but I tried. But before I could even fall asleep it was time to go and prepare for the dinner ceremony. I had to be there at four so I was busily preparing myself at 3 and off I went as one of the other best man fetched me.

Reaching there I thought if I was dressed in something rather formal it would have been fine but to their dismay I was supposed to wear what I had been wearing the whole day that was full with sweat! On the journey back to church, we also went into some mud so my pants were stained. So here I was dressed in a blue chequered shirt and brown pants when they wanted me to be in a suit again! Oh my. So one of the ladies quickly used her sewing skills and made the pants bigger and longer as I was fat and tall by Cambodian standards. Soon I was dressed up to look like this in the picture below. The bridesmaids looked gorgeous too.

SOOOO CUTE!!! Sothy’s Nephew

Not knowing what to expect again I was told we were to stay at the entrance two floors down in the open hot weather welcoming guests. The guests were given a door gift as they arrived. Each time someone arrives, we had to get up, greet them, give them the gifts as they passed us by for their hearty meal upstairs. So eight of us were like standing up and sitting and greeting and sweating and smiling until I was getting rather impatient. According to Sothy, as long as a table is filled up upstairs, they will already start eating. So while they were buffeting upstairs I was suffering here. I could see the agony on the bridesmaid’s faces and even the couple as she changed five dresses while all these things were happening. We had to be there greeting for 3 and a half hours. From a smile on my face, it started to look gloomy as there was pain in my legs and lack of understanding of everything. I was sitting there as they all talked to each other in Khmer and I was a blur case. It was torture. The smoke of incense from another wedding was making me choke and have a bad sore throat.

Finally it was time to go up. Aching all over I was hesitant to be singing the song I wrote later as my throat was tremendously painful. We went up and the couple went around table to table greeting people then it was time to walk down the aisle. So children with helium balloons were in front, the couple next and the best men and bridesmaids walked down the aisle that was lit up with fire crackers and confetti being thrown. Funny thing was that the firecrackers triggered explosions in the balloons that cause a pastor’s eyebrow to burn and some other ladies to have burns too (I found this out later). Maybe its not so funny if you are the victim…sorry. Still we walked on until we were overwhelmed with confetti, snow spray, and all kinds of sprays. We walked a few rounds letting them torture us and be happy. So funny.

Presenting to you the lovely couple!

The couple then started dancing as the rest of us went down and got ourselves cleaned up. When I got up, people were dancing together in the front. I was asked to join but lest they all wanted to die of laughter, I politely declined. So people were feasting, dancing and all…I was just catching my breath. SO exhausted I managed to eat something….my first meal of the day. But I was feeling so weary and sick in my throat.

Pastor Chan Roth and a cute gal who came all the way from the US for the wedding

Thank God people forgot about me singing. So I told Sothy I’d rather not sing. One by one guests left but many remained just dancing their hearts out. I made my move to the nearest pharmacy to get medicine so that I would not lose my voice as I had to preach tomorrow. Upon arriving back. I collapse in my bed. What a day! This has been the most physically tired I have been in a long time. I was happy though, happier that I’ve been in sometime. Sothy and Ratthana, Congratulations!

Makan Place

Not too long later I was shuffled upstairs to get dressed. Now, I won’t let you see pictures of that no no no. Guys and girls were dressed up upstairs but of course the girls had a small room to change. But everything else where done in the open so I was rather shy to be changing in front of ladies. But I wore a shorts inside but it was really odd. I was told that we were going to be changing a few times. So far, if that is my responsibility, I think I can take it. But I was changed into a full suit. For the benefit of the readers, the place is not air-coned and even hardly was there a fan. I was like they must be really mad!

The handsome groom

So I was wearing a t-shirt, a white shirt, a coat, shorts and pants. Man, I started sweating profusely. So I immediately had to tell myself to relax or I’m going to sweat more and stink. The ceremony begins at 7am and therefore it was not too hot yet but the sun is already high up in the sky. The guests were to carry all the gifts and come from a distance from the house. Somewhat like Isaac in the bible bringing gifts from afar. I was the umbrella bearer as the best man. Soon the sun began scorching down but there is an exchange of words between the hosts of the gift bearers and the host of the home. I don’t understand a single thing they were saying but all I knew was that I had to wait though it was so so hot.

At last, the gift bearers marched in presenting it to the bride’s family while we took this picture

Then it came to the part of the ceremony where the couple will bow in respect before the parents of each side. This is peculiar to me but it would seem to me their culture exerts a lot more filial piety than what we have at home. No wonder families are so closely knitted here despite many difficult circumstances.

We then proceeded upstairs again to change. This time is was into a traditional costume. Luckily there is no picture of me in it hahahaha. I mean as in full body kind because it looked like some sort of skirt. Haha. You see what the girls are wearing in the picture below? The bottom looks the same for guys. The material was really hot to be in. I still wore my t-shirt, white shirt and shorts inside too. I was thinking….what are they going to make me wear next!! Sothy being so naughty didn’t tell me the full details of what to expect. So while we were dressing and sweating our hearts out, they were eating their hearts out downstairs. Look at her expression. Must be so nice.

It took very long for us to dress up. Because the bride had a redo of everything she wore. Unlike our culture with a single best man or bridesmaid, they have three each. Their costumes were all quite complicated to wear. It took them three times and three different ladies to get it right for me. When we were ready, we went down.

Now this is called the cutting hair ceremony. The beginning part there was singing of songs by a guy and a girl and I don’t know at all what was sung or happening. They were dancing and singing and then they were talking and people were laughing. It was like a entertainment show. But people were really laughing so much and I looked so weird not responding. Then they interviewed the best man. Oh oh….good thing I’m not the first but when it came to me, I was interviewed in Khmer. What?? They all laughed. Now I have become the spot for entertainment and I have no idea what they are saying about me. Luckily another best man interpreted for me some of the questions. When I answered they laughed. I wonder why…was I missing some detail? All this torture for you Sothy Kong

Such nice colors…the wedding is so colorful

They then one by one starting from the immediate family went in pairs to cut the hair of the bride and groom and sprayed perfume as a symbol of blessing to the couple. Somehow the best men got sprayed too sometimes. So I was all smelling like ladies perfume and all sweaty wondering what to expect next when we got up and it was time for the preaching and where the couple exchanged vows.

The whole place was rearranged and we were to sit beside the couple all the time. I was the official sweat wiper for Sothy. A title I gave myself hahaha. Now this was the really difficult part. There is a way that you must sit that I have never in my life encountered. I was nudging Sothy, ‚Äòyou should have taught me this earlier’. Painful it was. My knees were like whoa….

So I sat there in a blank stare and in total agony (exaggerating) again throughout the sermon trying to understand what was really going on. Until they came to the part where the rings and vows were exchange, I was lost. I do prefer their ceremony because of a few things that we don’t have. First, before they took their vows, we had the most moving part of the entire ceremony. The couple will take turns to thank their parents before the crowd. I didn’t understand a word but the atmosphere was intense. So so intense. Finally halfway through the brides speech, she broke down in tears and you could see many in the crowd tearing. I held back my emotions because I don’t know what is acceptable here. The bridesmaids quickly comforted her as she continued to finish her appreciation to her loved ones.

Sothy thanking both his parents

Rathanna to her Mom and Family

Ps Nora explaining from the Word, They look like a King and Queen

For better or worse, In sickness In health……………….

Then they exchanged vows in an almost similar fashion. Now I forgot to mention that the bride and groom had both changed their costumes as you noticed but I didn’t have to anymore. Thank God. After they had said their vows with gleaming smiles on their faces, it was another unusual ceremony for me in where the bride and groom partook of the Lord’s Supper and proceeded to wash each other’s feet. I was thinking this is really good. It shows how much they loved each other and how humble they were. So moved. It was my duty to prepare the water and towels. So I did my job well I hope. They then used two candles that were initially lit by the parents of each side to then light the largest candle in the middle. I remember Adino doing something like that.

Now this is already 3 hours into the ceremony. And we finally come to the close of the morning session. In the final part of the ceremony, the bride and groom will be positioned as in the picture below as the immediate family proceeds to tie red strings around their wrists and use a rose to bless them with water and also put money into their hands. This went on for anyone who wanted to bless them with their ang pows and so on so forth. These red strings will be worn for more than a week after the wedding. So we had a prayer of blessing for the couple after that and Sothy representing the family will thank the guests then while the family takes pictures the guests feasted on the tasty food.

This is a view of the bride’s house on a swamp area

I woke up knowing Sothy was going to leave early and gave him a hug as I promised. Haha. Nothing bad as some of you have in mind. Aiyoyoyoyo. Then I continued my deep slumber until 9 am. In any event I think I really am some sort of bad luck charm as there was a blackout again when I woke up. Sigh so I decided to sleep since it was hot and I could do nothing much.

When the electricity came back up, I got straight into doing work. The sermons that I’m preparing seem harder to put into full script than I had first expected. I also had the problem of really not having a clear idea what I should preach. This is because I am so so so nervous. What if that’s not the message I’m supposed to preach? What if I cannot get the message across clearly? I spent most of the time doing this until I got so tired and watched some shows I had.

Before I knew it, it was time to go for an important practice. Tomorrow is the wedding day! I haven’t a clue what Cambodian weddings are like. So I had to be there. Guess what? There is a blackout in the bride’s home! I wonder if I caused it. Ahahhaah. I think I better pray harder.

Unlike our Chinese weddings, their ceremony is held at the lady’s home. In fact I learnt so many interesting facts about their culture. I learnt of my responsibility as the best man in setting up the props for the washing of feet ceremony between the couple. Nice isn’t it. I’m so excited.

I’m lying in bed recovering from the effects of being too mentally stimulated that I couldn’t sleep well when I see Sothy there praying at about 6 am. So I prayed to God too for I felt too physically weary. Then I fell into a deep slumber. Now before I realised it, Its 930am and its time to wake up. But Sothy is nowhere to be found. So I took a nice shower then started work on editing my blog and sermons. I am asked to post my sermons up too. I am still contemplating as I had not done it in full text. Still I think I will attempt to do that if it is possible ok?

So the first half of the day I am stuck here alone. Which is quite pleasant for me actually cause I’m a loner by nature. I could do this all day….in fact all week! Still I’m seriously missing home. I don’t know why I’m such a homey person.

Cambodian Tol

But soon it was time for lunch! The knocks on my door made me aware that it was time! My tummy was growling also. We were going to have lunch together again Pastor Net and Chan Roth and Sothy. Only then did I know it was Pastor Net and Pastor Chan Roth’s 4 year anniversary today! So I promised them that I will spend them a most delicious dinner tonight wherever they might want to go. Their food has a distinct herbal taste which I think may not suite all. Also it is common for them to eat parts of the animals too as in the internal organs. Oh the chicken here is so very skinny hahahaa.

Russian Market

Soon after that we were off to the Russian market. Don’t ask me why they call it the Russian Market. There I was to shop for all the things I would need to get for the people back in Malaysia. I spent 2 hours there shopping until I was going to drop. The heat was maddening. I think I smelt worse than a horse at that time.

Small Cubicle with Sothy checking his private emails….shhh

Now we’re weaving through traffic on the Honda Cub while heading towards ‚ÄòSo So Net’. Does that name help any of you? Yes! That’s where I was posting on my first day to you. The computer and internet was ssssoooooooooooo slow. That goes to show how spoilt I am. So I got stuck behind an awfully old piece of equipment trying so hard to tell you how I am doing. It’s also not air-conditioned for your information.

I needed a fix for all these heat so I asked Sothy to kindly bring me to Coffee Plus. It’s something like Starbucks but way cheaper. I am not a fan of coffee but I went there for the Ice Blended Blueberry. Guess what! It only costs RM 3 for something I would pay RM 12.50 for back home. It tasted like heaven at that moment. But the sky was getting really dark fast and so we quickly made our way back to the church.

Still more stuff that is digusting and smelly

I sometimes think I am a bad luck charm and I think I have the right to think so because inevitably I might have caused a blackout! Hahahahha. So we spent the almost two hours sitting outside chatting about ministry and having the most meaningful conversations while Sothy was off to rescue the bride to be. What a prince charming! The rain didn’t cease nor stop.

Pray for Pastor Net and Chan Roth as they survive by God’s grace. They are renting the current church and are hoping to procure their own church building with the help of some missionaries.

It is apparent that my habit of not being to wake up has kicked in this morning. At the back of my mind I knew I had to because I haven’t packed my things needed to travel. Unlike most travellers, this person here is not prepared because he was rushing the wedding song needed when he is there.

So I dragged myself of the bed after a few phone calls and here I am packing all the stuff, deciding what gadgets I’ll need to carry along to survive this trip. Then I realise I’m awfully late!!! So I stuffed everything I needed and quickly handed it to someone who helped me take them to her place where I will park my bike.

All packed and ready to roll!

Then I quickly got into the car then we were on the way to the airport. Now my father was driving at 70km/h. There I was sitting being so patient…..how could anyone drive at that speed! Not long later I could see he was falling asleep behind the wheel. So I took over the wheel and I didn’t speed. No I didn’t. So reaching there I checked in my luggage but something caught my attention! They were having a contest! Formula 1 driving. Oh my. I’m eligible to take part with my ticket. Another step close to prove my formula one skills!

But my parents were hungry so that had to be put on hold. We went to the food court, a new one i presume as I have never seen it before. There the food was quite reasonably priced to my surprise but I was busy filling my tummy with yummy egg tarts and cheese tarts bought for me by a dear friend. Then my mom came back and started to grumble a lot. She was complaining how she was cheated. That the price of the set meal she had didn’t make sense because if she buys it separately it would be cheaper. She was complaining during the whole meal about how she was cheated!

Yummy egg tarts

The meal my mom was complaining about

Now it was time for me to pit my skills on the machine. Now I was getting really nervous waiting for my turn. I was watching the rest before me crashing so many times. Worse still I was bragging to my mom how she had ruined my formula 1 career hahaha. Now they were doing quite bad before me and so I was busy looking and memorising the track and before I knew it, it was my turn! So I got in typical formula 1 driver style. Now we are only given 2 laps to set the fastest time. The time to beat was 1m 10 secs. Then I would win formula 1 tickets to the Singapore GP.

The budding formula 1 driver

On the mark, get set go!!! Wait a minute that is atheletics. The five red light were coming on. Go go go! I was driving like a charm. No accidents I looked like a pro. First lap was trying the track out I was at 1m 37 secs. I knew I had to step on it the next lap. I was pushing the car to the limits. I see the finishing line!! What is my time! I couldn’t see it. Man! 1m 27secs. I only made it 10 secs faster. Disappointing. But I knew I was not bad la. Give me one more lap I would have easily crushed that time.

So with my head hanged low I walked in to the boarding hall. So distracted I just took out my EEEPC to surf the internet. Then suddenly I hear an announcement on the loudspeaker. “Attention passenger named Leon Lim Kok Weng please report to the security checkpoint”. Oh no, should I run???? Am I a suspected terrorist? Why are they hunting for me! What did I do wrong?

What is there to lose, I have no criminal record yet, I think I’m safe right? I slowly approached the security desk and you know what? They didn’t nab me and cuff me. Phew. Instead then I see a police lady officer walking towards me with something familiar in her hands. MY WALLET!! Oh boy! So much drama for a clumsy clumsy boy. Thank God I didn’t lose my wallet. I left it when they were scanning my luggage. So so clumsy.

View from window in the KLIA

I haven’t even reached Cambodia and so much has happened! Time to get on the plane…why are people so in a rush to board? I took my time. Got to sit next to the window, in fact I managed to obtain 3 seats to myself! I won’t teach you my secret technique on how to do that. Hehehhee. After the long boring wait for takeoff (reminded me of my bikes acceleration ‚Äì miss my bike sob sob), I grabbed my notebook again and start working on this post and my sermon. I needed to touch it up so much. I’m so nervous. It’s a huge responsibility

View of Phnom Penh International Airport

But before I knew it we were already arriving. You can see that Cambodia unlike Malaysia is very flat. Can’t see any hills even from the plane! There I finally meet up with the husband to be (not my husband to be ok)! So exciting! He brought me to Toeuk Thla. A church I’ve been before and here is my bedroom. Hmm looks so comfy.

Where I lay my head down

Now I got my gadgets all charged up and headed for dinner. Adino…..guess what I’m eating……

From right: Pastor Sothy, Pastor Net and his wife

It seems KFC is taking over the world! hahahaha. It just opened up here two months back and the more surprising part is that the owner is a church member of Subang AOG, the former church my father pastored. What a small world…. So I ended up eating too much again…..so much for not liking food

Now I’m so full laying here blogging just before I start work on my sermon again….I miss home……tata…see you tomorrow.

I noticed also so little comments on my song….it must be quite bad…sigh

Dear readers! I would regretly have to inform you that I will not be able to feed your desires of having wonderful articles to read for more than a week! I know, I know don’t be sad. I can see those teardrops falling from your eyes.

Don’t you worry though. When I’m back you’ll have too much to read! I will be writing something up everyday while I’m there. If…just if I can afford to have access to the internet there in my busy schedule…you’ll see an update!

I’ll be gone from the 7-14 May. Pray that I will have God’s blessings as I go to serve the people there.
